10 Things to do in Omaha—Summer Edition

Summer fun in Omaha NE

Time for some fun in the sun in Omaha NE!

Sunshine is a powerful thing. It boosts your vitamin D, improving both your physical and mental health. Now that the weather is warming up, the kids are restless, you’re likely beyond ready to get out of the house and make some memories. But sometimes, it’s a little hard to get the kids to slow down enough to make a game plan. We’ve got some ideas for you. Below are 10 local places you can take the kids this summer in Omaha NE!

Hydrant Parties

Throughout the summer, the city of Omaha puts on hydrant parties in three separate locations across the city. The city opens up the fire hydrants and connects their own, larger-than-life sprinklers. Get the family dressed in their swimsuits, pack some towels, and head over for a fun-filled day that is sure to tire the entire family out and beat the heat.

Sports for Everyone

All Play is a barrier-free sports and recreation facility here in Omaha. They pride themselves on being fully accessible! The playground is their most popular feature, being accessible and shaded for those hot summer days. They also have baseball and softball fields, and tennis courts.

Strawberry Picking

“Where families can be together.” This is the tagline for Ditmar’s Orchard and Vineyard, promising a great day outside for the whole family. This adorable place is filled with so many options, you are bound to find something for each individual member of the family to enjoy! Take the children to the playground to climb around on the giant tires. When they finish with that, switch gears to pick whatever the farm has for the season. Sometimes, this is strawberries, other times apples.

Throughout August-October, they have extra activities including bounce houses, a corn maze, a human hamster wheel, and ax throwing. So keep checking back to see what fun they have planned for each season!

Inflatable Paradise

At the Louisville State Recreation Area, they set up a large, inflatable obstacle course for all ages to roam about. If a floating inflatable playground isn’t quite your style, the gorgeous park  has many other options. You can fish, boat, swim, or simply picnic and spend time with the family. With 192 acres to explore, you can be sure you and your family will make some unforgettable memories.

Zoo

The zoo is a place of fond memories for many families. The Omaha Zoo is wheelchair accessible, including their train, tram, or skyfari. They have various events running throughout the summer, so be sure to keep an eye out for the next adventure for you and your family.

Spraygrounds!

Did you know, Omaha has a myriad of different spraygrounds across the city? To make this even better, the majority of them are free! They typically open on the first Saturday in May, and operate daily until the last Sunday in September. With so many options, you can make a tour for the kids and try a new one every week throughout summer break!

I Scream, You Scream…

We all scream for ice cream!

Ice cream is a summer favorite in most households. Ted and Wally’s has been making their ice cream from hyper-local ingredients since 1984. To keep their ice cream as local as possible, they have partnered with growers, chefs, and makers from the immediate area. They have two locations, one off of Jackson St. and one off of Maple St. They are a small, family-owned business that is sure to make your mouth water!

Lake Trail

Getting outside and going on a bit of a hike can be an amazing way to spend time with the family. But sometimes, we don’t want to trek across unknown terrains to the top of a mountain. The Zorinsky Lake West Trail is a 3.4-mile loop near town. It’s paved and should be accessible for both wheelchairs and strollers.

What are you waiting for? Pack a picnic, throw the kids in the car, (don’t forget the sunscreen!) and go have an adventure-filled day on the trail!

Pizza Machine

Sometimes we don’t want to spend one more minute outside. Maybe it’s raining, maybe it’s just too hot. For days like that, Pizza Machine has you covered. They are equipped with laser tag, go-karts, thrill rides, bowling, arcade games, and, of course, pizza.

Go to the beach!

I hear you, Nebraska is a landlocked state. That doesn’t mean we don’t have beaches! Admittedly, they are sand-lined rivers and lakes, but we’ve made the best with what we have. If you’re wanting to take the family on a day-trip to a Nebraska “beach,” go ahead and pick from one of these options!

Summertime is the perfect opportunity to make memories for the entire family. Because of this, the schedule can become packed rather quickly. We here at Pediatric Dental Specialists want to keep your children smiling brightly, so be sure to find us a spot on your busy calendar!
